This Research Associate is in a key position in the Metabolic Disease group. This person will have responsibilities in helping with numerous pharmacology studies on Test Agents as well as running specific phenotypic assays in mice.
The position demands experience with handling small animals (predominantly mice but may also include rats) but preference would be given to those who also have the ability to do in vitro work (in biochemistry, including ELISA, Western blot and routine tissue culture).
Specifically, this person in this role will:
- Work with other Research Associates under the direction of a Scientist in the dosing of animals with test agents via subcutaneous, intravenous, or intraperitoneal injection and/or oral gavage routes and subsequent collection of blood samples via orbital or tail bleeds.
- Work with other Research Associates and the Scientists in the group to schedule in vivo experiments for different genetically modified mice going through the Phenotyping Program. This will consists of serum sample analysis from in vivo studies such as lipid, insulin and glucose tolerance test results as well as other metabolic tests.
- Be responsible for analysis of sample data i.e. for entering, analyzing and graphing data in statistical and graphics packages.
- Help conduct routine ELISAs, EIAs and RIAs for Muscle & Metabolic Disorders related projects.
-Be responsible for entering, analyzing and graphing data associated with these assays.
Experience - External:
Experience:
· The qualified individual could have a Bachelor's degree in Biology or related medical science and two to five years of research experience.
· Knowledge of physiology, lipid biology and metabolic disease models would be strongly recommended.
· Candidates should be experienced in the general operations of a laboratory. They should have mastered basic reagent preparation methods and demonstrate the ability to learn new methods and achieve results more quickly.
· Research Associates are expected to work as part of a team and seek advise when in doubt, however they should be able to troubleshoot experiments and suggest improvements to methods.
In addition, this Research Associate is:
-Responsible for coordinating receipt of samples from collaborating intramural research groups, assaying these samples and delivering raw data to the collaborative group.
- Attending and actively participate in weekly Muscle & Metabolism Group meetings
- Interacting with Scientists and Director for updates on status of experiments in progress.
- Routinely writing up experiments from protocols in a clear and concise manner in laboratory notebooks. It is hoped that Research Associate can contribute to the writing draft experimental protocol or method SOP with guidance from scientist.
