Working area: Neurophysiology and Rehabilitation
Number of places: 3
Principal investigator: Linamara Rizzo Battistella
Unit/Instituition: Faculdade de Medicina/FMUSP
Deadline for submissions: 2019-11-08

The project "Inhibitory Deficit as a Marker of Neuroplasticity in Rehabilitation" will provide the post-doctoral student a better understanding and learning of the process of elaboration and structuring of a scientific research and of the necessary steps for the translation of the generated knowledge into clinical practice. Studies will be conducted at the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Institute of Hospital das Clínicas (HC), the general and teaching hospital of University of São Paulo's Medicine School (FM-USP).
In addition, the student will deepen his/her knowledge regarding rehabilitation research, including learning about modern techniques of neurophysiological study, brain plasticity and functional evaluations.
The most relevant aspect will be the opportunity for learning with the guidance of the International Researcher, Prof. Felipe Fregni (from Harvard University), brought in as fellowship supervisor thanks to subsidy from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) via its SPEC funding scheme (São Paulo Excellence Chair). Throughout this period the student will have the opportunity to construct scientific thinking and complete his/her training as a researcher.
- The candidate must have completed his PhD up 7 (seven) years prior to subscription;
- The scholarship requires exclusive dedication to the research project;
- The scholarship holder can not have an employment relationship and can not receive, during the term of the scholarship, a scholarship from another entity, salary or remuneration from the exercise of activities of any nature.
About the project:
The project is based on specific hypotheses and seeks to identify through a "transdiagnostic" approach the neurophysiological biomarkers of functional recovery in four different clinical conditions, namely Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), amputation and knee osteoarthrosis (OA), and then comparing them with healthy subjects (matched for age and sex). The project includes the collection of clinical, demographic, functional and neurophysiological data of 100 patients from each of the disease groups, in addition to 100 healthy subjects of the control group, all of which will be carried out in a period of four years.
In order to fully explore the possible correlations of patients' functionality with neurophysiological characteristics, a large number of functional assessment instruments, including robotic systems and motion sensors, will be used. In clinical practice, on the other hand, it is not always possible to carry out the same evaluations performed in the research due to the complexity and the duration of the project. Thus, the difficulty of performing the functional evaluations of patients in rehabilitation in a fast, objective and accurate way is one of the challenges of translating the generated knowledge into research for clinical practice.
- Excellent verbal and written communication;

Interested parties should send email to centrodepesquisa.imreahc.fm.usp.br and to antonio.miglioratihc.fm.usp.br until November, 08th, 2019 with the following documentation:
- Updated Curriculum Vitae;

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity. This fellowship has a duration of up to 24 months. Continuity will depend on the student's satisfactory assessment.
