Location: Vancouver, Canada

The Department of Wood Science, UBC-Vancouver Campus seeks a Research Associate to join its newly-created Bamboo Utilization Technology (BUT) Program, to conduct fundamental and applied research on bamboo and bamboo-based composites. Using both experimental and analytical approaches, he or she will develop new knowledge about structure-property relationship of bamboo, bond-ability and durability of bamboo and bamboo-wood composites, and processing-property relationship of engineered bamboo/wood products. Taking advantage of bamboo‚s high strength, fast growth rate and low carbon footprint, the goal of this research is to develop next-generation sustainable building materials using bamboo and wood. The work will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Chunping Dai and in collaboration with partners around the world.

Responsibilities include:
1. Conduct in-depth literature search on state-of-the-art bamboo composite materials;
2. Identify knowledge gaps and develop research plans to address those gaps;
3. Conduct research using well-design experiments and analytical models similar to those developed for wood and other composites;
4. Develop prototype bamboo and bamboo-wood composite products for value-added and building construction applications;
5. Supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
6. Present results at national and international meetings;
7. Prepare manuscripts for publication in high quality peer reviewed journals.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in wood science or related fields (e.g. materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering) and 5 years of postdoctoral research experience in the fields of wood science, particularly wood composites or materials science. Prior experience in bamboo or other natural fibres, and expertise in materials or process modeling will be an asset. Candidates should have a good knowledge of wood/bamboo physics, durability, composite manufacturing and product properties as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications. The candidate should be highly skilled in data processing using spreadsheet or software such as Python. Other requirements for successful applicants include excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work in a dynamic research team, and the ability to work on a project with defined milestones and timelines.

The appointment will initially be for one year, with options for renewal subject to funding sources effective October 16, 2019. Please direct inquiries, and applications consisting of cover letter, current CV and contact information of three references prior to 16th September 2019 to:
