The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
The Centre of Excellence for Rice Value Addition (CERVA) is a major component of the IRRI South Asian Regional Centre (ISARC) that is being established in India by IRRI, with strong support from the Government of India to enhance research and training capabilities in the south Asian and African regions enabling production of rice with superior grain qualities. Under the general supervision of the researcher, the Research Technician will perform laboratory procedures and perform data documentation for analysis. The person will be responsible for timely completion of all specified tasks assigned by the researcher.
The Research Technician will perform rice grain quality evaluation following standard operating procedures, provide assistance to managing routine Quality Evaluation Service and research activities, perform sample and data documentation, manage appropriate storage of samples, and ensure laboratory instruments are maintained in working condition.
This position will be based at the IRRI South Asia Research Center, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh in India and will only be filled by permanent citizens of India.

Roles and Responsibilities
Perform/conduct activities to support experiment(s) in the field of grain quality evaluation
Perform laboratory procedures for grain sample preparation, physical traits evaluation and grain compositional and textural analyses of rice. The duties include milling of rice using a range of mills, use of techniques and instruments that measure Amylose Content, Grain Dimensions, Viscosity, Head Rice Yield, Gel consistency, and Gelatinization Temperature.
Collect and/or prepare samples, reagents, standards, and/or chemicals and perform sample handling, inspection and documentation
Prepare materials needed for laboratory requisition of supplies, job orders for repair and spare parts of equipment following standard protocols
Operate and perform daily preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and conduct good housekeeping on assigned work area
Support requisition and inventory of laboratory supplies
Assist in compilation of data
Supervise contract workers for sample preparation and any other activities to assist laboratory experiments
Ensure ready supply of reagents, stock solutions and laboratory consumables
Data collection and documentation related to grain quality evaluation of breeders’ lines and material from external customers as required
Collect, encode, document and submit data for analysis
Prepare schedule for laboratory activities and delegate tasks to and oversee the work of Research technicians, and contract workers
Assist in the treatment and disposal of chemical wastes
Process raw data from instrument runs
High school graduate with 5 years relevant work experience or;
3 years of college education and two years relevant work experience
Basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software,
Hands-on experience in grain analysis and the use of basic laboratory instrumentation.
Experience in preparing chemical reagents
Experience in rice production
Experience in database management
Allowances & Benefits
House Rent Allowance
IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
A monthly transport allowances are provided to NRS as follows:
Job level 3: INR 2,000
One hundred and thirteen percent (113 %) of employee’s base pay
Leave Travel Allowance
One month base pay per annum on availing minimum 2 days of annual/vacation leave
INR 1,000/- per child per month (limited to 2 children)
