Research Project: Functional study of the cell signaling pathways involved in the immune response of the tick Amblyomma aureolatum against Rickettsia rickettsii, ethyological agent of Brazilian Spotted Fever

Ticks have parasitic habit of life, feeding obligatory on blood and /or lymph of vertebrates. As a result of hematophagy, these arthropods transmit a wide variety of pathogens. Among the tickborne disease, we highlight Bovine Anaplasmosis and Brazilian Spotted Fever. The current project aims to elucidate the molecular factors involved in the interaction between ticks and rickettsiae focusing on cell signalling pathways involved in the immune response. To that end, we will use several cellular, molecular and biochemical methods. The generated data may reveal new targets for the development of vaccines for the control of both ticks and diseases.
