A postdoctoral position is available in the COPD Program for studying the role of environmental pollution in increasing the risk of developing COPD both in human populations and in animal models of disease.
The project involves the study of how airway cell biological changes can cause the development of asthma and chronic bronchitis. This position is for individuals interested in identifying the role of inflammatory, apoptotic, neuronal, or autophagic pathways involved in cigarette and wood smoke-induced changes in the lung. Ongoing studies involve transgenic and knockout mice, organ and cell culture models to determine the role of certain proteins in the development of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The candidate is expected to conduct independent research, which requires decisions as to methodology employed. Remains abreast of developments in scientific field. May develop proposals for research funding. Collaborates with research staff. May supervise technical staff and provide training.
Conducts independent research, which requires decisions as to methodology employed. Performs fundamental scientific tasks on own, exercising judgement in selecting the methodology. Analyzes, tests, and investigates specific phases of research. Assists with the resolution of problems and documents/reports results.
Analyzes, interprets, and reports data in manuscripts. Writes and reviews protocols. Encouraged to write proposals for research funding. May develop, determine, and conducts assays and tests to be used to answer specific scientific questions. Collaborates with other scientists and investigators in same or other labs as necessary providing advice and assistance with experiments and in areas of expertise. Manages lab equipment assigned utilizing established policy. Reports results of research in the form of open literature publications and presentations at scientific meetings
Applicants for a postdoc position should have completed a Ph.D, in related field. A demonstrated ability to handle scientific tasks and experience in publication is required.
Demonstrated ability to handle fundamental scientific tasks. Comprehensive knowledge of technical area. Skilled with statistics. Able to analyze and present data in an understandable manner. Must be able to cooperate and work collaboratively with others. Must be able to give recommendations in area of expertise. Must be able to take responsibilities for own actions.
Successful completion of a post offer pre-employment physical examination may be required. Successful completion of CDC/DOJ, DOD approval to access Select Agent(s) and Toxin(s) may be required. May handle toxic material. Work in lab involves standing sitting, visual acuity, hand use, some bending and lifting. Functions in a manner consistent with promoting health and safety. Work location will be completed at North and South campus.
