The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
IRRI India is implementing a project on “Increasing Productivity of Rice-Based Cropping Systems and Farmers’ Income in Odisha” funded by the Government of Odisha with an estimated budget of USD 12.75 million in 5 years. The program aims to enhance and stabilize rice productivity and increase farmers’ income particularly in stress prone areas and establish sustainable rice based farming systems. The program is composed of 5 individual subproject interventions that will be implement in 30 districts. The first component will focus on strengthening seed systems of stress tolerant rice varieties through innovative demonstration & extension approaches; the second component will validate and develop extrapolation domain mapping methodology to identify the suitability of rice base cropping systems in underutilized stress prone rice fallows areas’ of the state; the third project component intends to increase profitability and productivity by introducing the Rice Crop Manager software; the fourth component will help increase rice productivity through innovative extension methods, creating knowledge management banks, fostering partnerships and capacity building of target partners; and the fifth component assist in reducing risk of production by working with key stakeholders in developing crop insurance for farmers considering affordability and economic viability. This component introduces the Satellite Remote-Sensing Based Rice Monitoring System to assess the loss during natural calamities. Each project component contributes to the overall goal to increase the productivity of rice based cropping systems and farmers’ income in Odisha.
The position will plan and conduct research studies including activities such as preparation, improvement and/or development of necessary research tools, data collection, analysis and interpretation. Work closely with collaborating partner(s), exchange information and present research findings (seminars, conferences, publications). Supervise, coach and guide researchers and research technicians. Prepare and provide training as needed.
This position will be based out of the IRRI India Office at Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India, and may only be filled by permanent citizens of India.

Roles and Responsibilities
Manage the design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and execution of projects related to soil science to ensure defined objectives meet project’s research requirements.
Provide timely recommendations to new processes and/or improvement(s) to secure efficient performance including operational manuals and review of standard operating procedures (SOP).
Synthesize and verify quality of field data and interpret research findings based on the defined objective.
Facilitate the develop training manuals and conduct capacity building on technology transfers to gain appreciation of using Rice Crop Manager from target audience.
Represent the specific project component at various platforms including regular monitoring meetings with the Odisha State government.
Collaborate with internal/external key research partner(s) including government, local NGOs, local farmer groups and universities to create best suitable management pathway(s).
Establish, secure and maintain linkages with project teams, local government unit, partners, farmer groups, and universities to ensure smooth execution of field activities and work plan.
Align with government partners regarding the progress of the project through timely provision of presentations and scientific reports.
Provide supervision to research officers, technicians and trainers in order to define the scope of research activities and harmonize the undertakings of the team(s) assigned in districts.
Recommend interventions to resolve appearing difficulties such as setbacks through technical errors, license and/or other complex issues that affect the successful completion of the research study.
Deliver timely research reports for the consumption of the stakeholders.
Oversee the implementation of data management to guarantee quality data, data back up and data integrity.
Review existing course of actions, develop work plan, set milestones and supervise the implementation of research activities.
Prepare and assure quality of project reports and papers for presentation at policy and academic forums and publication in the impact peer review journals.
Master Degree in Agronomy, Soil Science or other related discipline with minimum 6 years relevant work experience or
PhD Degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, and other related discipline with 2-3 years relevant experience or Equivalent training / experience
Has proven technical proficiency in conducting research
Has experience contributing to research publications, presentations or reports.
Has excellent analytical skills using advanced statistical tools
Has implemented Quality assurance tools
Is familiar with Risk management
Has experience with Research management
Has experience in leading a small research team
House-Rent Allowance: IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
Transport Allowance: A monthly transport allowance is provided to NRS as below: NRS L6: INR 5,000
Dearness Allowance: One Hundred and Thirteen percent (113%) of employee’s base pay.
Leave Travel Allowance (LTA): One-month base pay per annum, on availing minimum 2 days of vacation leave
Education Allowance: INR 1000/- per child per month (limited 2 children)
