Job Purpose

IRRI India is implementing a livelihood security project in the State of Odisha funded by the Indian Government. The program is composed of 5 individual project interventions with different components to be implemented in 30 districts with an estimated budget of USD 28 million in 5 years. Each component is an intervention that will assist in enhancing rice productivity of Odisha State. The first component will focus on strengthening seed systems of stress tolerant rice varieties through innovative demonstration & extension approaches; the second component will validate and develop extrapolation domain mapping methodology to identify the suitability of rice base cropping systems in underutilized stress prone rice fallows areas’ of the state; the third project component intends to increase profitability and productivity by introducing the Rice Crop Manager software; the fourth component will help increase rice productivity through innovative extension methods, creating knowledge management banks, fostering partnerships and capacity building of target partners; and the fifth component will assist in reducing risk of production by working with key stakeholders in developing crop insurance for farmers considering affordability and economic viability. This component introduces the Satellite Remote-Sensing Based Rice Monitoring System to assess the loss during natural calamities. Each project component contributes to the overall goal to increase the productivity of rice-based cropping systems and farmers’ income in Odisha.

This position will provide support in the implementation of project activities on Rice Monitoring products including data gathering and conducting surveys to farmers.

This position will be based out of the IRRI India Office at Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India, and may only be filled by permanent citizens of India.

Roles and Responsibilities


  • Visit field sites in order to monitor the research studies on the assigned districts.
  • Observe field trials and conduct field data collection e,g, plant height, yield information, water depth, soil type of the field to be submitted to the supervisor for further data processing.
  • Conduct data gathering activities using in-depth interviews and farmer surveys to determine basic information about the field, other agronomic activities, and biotic and abiotic stress and mitigation.


  • Coordinate with farmers regarding field data collection to ensure that work activities are properly communicated
  • Provide regular update to the supervisor to immediately resolve issues encountered during the execution of the project activities


  • Review data collected to ensure data accuracy and quality to be submitted to the supervisor.
  • Organize field data records for easy retrieval and proper data management.
  • High school graduate with 5 years relevant work experience; or,
  • 2 years of college education with 3 years relevant work experience
Skills Required


  • Has basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
  • Has experience in data collection
  • Has good interpersonal skills
  • Has good organizational skills


  • Is in the possession of a driver’s license
  • Has experience in rice production and basic agronomic data
  • Has knowledge on cultural and gender diversity


  • House-Rent Allowance: IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
  • Transport Allowance: A monthly transport allowance is provided to NRS as below: NRS L2: INR 2,000
  • Dearness Allowance: One Hundred and Thirteen percent (113%) of employee’s base pay.
  • Leave Travel Allowance (LTA): One-month base pay per annum, on availing minimum 2 days of vacation leave
  • Education Allowance: INR 1000/- per child per month (limited 2 children)
