Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

IRRI India is implementing a project on “Increasing Productivity of Rice-Based Cropping Systems and Farmers’ Income in Odisha” funded by the Government of Odisha with an estimated budget of USD 12.75 million in 5 years. The program aims to enhance and stabilize rice productivity and increase farmers’ income particularly in stress prone areas and establish sustainable rice based farming systems. The program is composed of 5 individual sub project interventions that will be implemented in 30 districts. The first component will focus on strengthening seed systems of stress tolerant rice varieties through innovative demonstration & extension approaches; the second component will validate and develop extrapolation domain mapping methodology to identify the suitability of rice base cropping systems in underutilized stress prone rice fallows areas’ of the state; the third project component intends to increase profitability and productivity by introducing the Rice Crop Manager software; the fourth component will help increase rice productivity through innovative extension methods, creating knowledge management banks, fostering partnerships and capacity building of target partners; and the fifth component will assist in reducing risk of production by working with key stakeholders in developing crop insurance for farmers considering affordability and economic viability. This component introduces the Satellite Remote-Sensing Based Rice Monitoring System to assess the loss during natural calamities. Each project component contributes to the overall goal to increase the productivity of rice-based cropping systems and farmers’ income in Odisha.


This position will focus on the socio economic factors that will affect and assist in the development and adoption of the crop insurance system. This includes understanding the stakeholders, mapping socioeconomic landscape of the target population and ensuring that socioeconomic implications are considered in the research study.

This position will be based out of the IRRI India Office at Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India, and may only be filled by permanent citizens of India.

Roles and Responsibilities

Purpose

  • Support the crop insurance team in identifying socio-economic and cultural factors that will affect the social acceptance and adoption of the crop insurance system;
  • Provide technical input and support in the assessment, design, implementation, monitoring, analysis and reporting of the crop insurance research component;
  • Enhance participation by understanding the needs of end-users;
  • Recommend immediate intervention to research design and implementation related to socioeconomic issues when necessary;
  • Support the insurance team to develop insurance awareness and training programs and its implementation.

Engagement

  • Consult and collaborate with key stakeholders of other Project components in the integration of the execution of the projects;
  • Advise internal stakeholders on the socio-economic impact of crop insurance to direct stakeholder;
  • Advise on socio-economic and cultural factors that will facilitate the social acceptance and adoption of Crop
  • Insurance system; and
  • Planning, monitoring and review of field level engagements and their implementations

Delivery

  • Ensure that all socioeconomic factors are considered in the execution of the project;
  • Monitor socioeconomic indicators that will affect the social acceptance and adoption of the crop insurance programs;
  • Understand the vulnerabilities and coping mechanisms of key stakeholders to the risks in rice production;
  • Contribute to the development of report and publication of research process and outcomes at academic and policy level forums.
Qualifications

Master’s degree in Social Sciences/Economics or related field with minimum 3 years of relevant experience, or;
PhD in Social Sciences/Economics or related field with minimum 1 year of relevant experience.

Allowances

  • House-Rent Allowance: IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
  • Transport Allowance: A monthly transport allowance is provided to NRS as below: NRS L5: INR 4,000
  • Dearness Allowance: One Hundred and Thirteen percent (113%) of employee’s base pay.
  • Leave Travel Allowance (LTA): One-month base pay per annum, on availing minimum 2 days of vacation leave
  • Education Allowance: INR 1000/- per child per month (limited 2 children)
