Postdoc in thyroid epidemiology incl RCT (Netherlands/China)Posted by: Erasmus MC
Posted date: Oct-28-2018
Postdoctoral researcher position
Project background: Thyroid hormone is an important regulator of metabolism, growth and development during pregnancy. Thyroid disease during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes including miscarriage, preterm birth and suboptimal neurodevelopment of the child. Recent studies indicate that incorporating physiological changes during pregnancy such as the thyroidal stimulation to hCG, and also the changes in thyroid function throughout pregnancy can help to better identify women at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This project focuses on these new insights and also on setting-up an interventional study to investigate the effects of thyroid treatment. The currently advertised position comprises a collaboration between the Academic Center for Thyroid Diseases, Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), and the International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital, Jiatong University in Shanghai (China).
Project goal and description: The two main goals of this project are: 1) to study the determinants and consequences of thyroid (dys)function during pregnancy using a large prospective database of >40.000 pregnant women with multiple thyroid function and related measurements, and 2) to create the infrastructure and start-up a large randomized clinical trial investigating the effects of thyroid hormone treatment on the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with subclinical thyroid disease.
Working environment: After a start-up period of 3-months at the Erasmus University Medical Center, during which we will introduce a study project and work together discussing our group’s research-specific insights, you will spend 9 months per year in the International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital (IPMCH) and 3 months per year at the Academic Center for Thyroid Diseases (ACTD) and department of Epidemiology, Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam. The IPMCH is a large community obstetrics and gynecology hospital in the urban center of Shanghai that provides secondary and tertiary care for roughly 17.000 pregnant women per year. The Erasmus MC is the largest academic center of the Netherlands, with the ACTD as a leading center for clinical thyroid disease and thyroid research that works in tight collaboration with the world-renowned department of epidemiology.
You will work closely together with experts in the fields of gynecology, thyroidology, epidemiology and statistics; the team of professor Jianxia Fan (Director of the Perinatology Dept. at the IPMCH consisting of clinical and research fellows, MSc and PhD students), Dr. Tim Korevaar (postdoctoral research fellow at ACTD and principle investigator at IPMCH), professor Robin Peeters (Director of the Erasmus MC ACTD), professor He-Feng Huang (Director of IPMCH, Member of the Chinese Academy of Science), and other collaborators from Erasmus MC and ACTD collaborators from other universities with expertise on specific study subjects.
Profile: This position is best fit for candidates with a PhD in a field related to epidemiology, statistics, medicine and/or clinical endocrinology that have an interest in endocrinology and/or clinical-epidemiological studies and who are excited to built-up the infrastructure for randomized clinical trials together with us. We are looking for an enthusiastic, independent and communicative candidate that is willing to work-hard and can enjoy living in a vibrant city like Shanghai. This candidate would preferably be assertive and able to work both independently and in close collaboration with research staff, (PhD) students and medical doctors. Presentation of a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/or relevant registration such as BIG/RGS are conditions for the appointment.
What we offer: We offer the opportunity to perform clinically meaningful large observational studies within an established infrastructure and the ability to set-up a large randomized controlled trial. In parallel, you will have room to develop your research, management and teaching skills in a prosperous environment with the opportunity to work independently. You will receive a temporary position for 1 year with the intention to extend to a total of 3 years and with the possibility to extend to a total of 4 years. The net yearly salary is roughly € 34.000,- (RMB 240.000,-) which could be supplemented by additional publication fees. The terms of employment are according to the contractual agreements as provided by International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital.
