Job Description: The Agricultural Research Station at Virginia State University (VSU) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to study genetics, genomics and molecular biology of wild species purslane, and crop and model species carrying novel genes from purslane, related to abiotic stress tolerance. The position is 100% research with 12-month appointment and renewable for up to 3 years depending upon performance. The successful candidate will work independently and cooperatively with the project leader, and will have the opportunity to get experience on proposal writings in conjunction with the principal investigator, and to mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students.
Duties and Responsibilities: The position will partially lead and implement newly funded USDA projects. The major responsibilities and duties include, but not limited to, the following: comparative transcriptome analysis of purslane heavy metal tolerance; molecular cloning of potential candidate genes corresponding to purslaneās heavy metal tolerance; molecular characterization of two Arabidopsis homozygous transgenic lines overexpressing purslane genes for their responses to both abiotic and biotic stresses; and identification of novel genes related to abiotic stress tolerance through Yeast-2-Hybrid screening system. The incumbent will collect, summarize and statistically analyze data, prepare posters, PPTs and manuscripts related to the projects for conference presentation and publication.
Position Requirement: PhD in plant molecular genetics, plant genomics, or related disciplines is required. The incumbent should have received extensive training and have hands-on experience on laboratory-orientated basic research including gene cloning, gene expression analysis, transcriptome profiling and its bioinformatics analysis, and yeast-2 hybrid screening techniques. The successful candidate should also have effective communication skills in both verbal and written English.
