The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
The World Bank supported APART project is aimed at increasing productivity and profitability of small and marginal farmers in rice-based cropping systems and facilitate agri-business investments, market access, and enable smallholder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to produce crops resilient to recurrent floods or droughts in 16 districts of Assam. The incumbent will provide assistance in execution of planned activities on capacity building, training, and knowledge dissemination in close coordination with Assam Agriculture University, Department of Agriculture and other stakeholders.
Under the minimum supervision of Senior Scientist, I, and Team Leader APART project, the job holder will work towards transfer of knowledge of crop and natural management solutions, system Intensification (SI) technologies, seed systems, and post-harvest options through different audiovisual means, including training and demonstrations. Provide guidance on performance of knowledge dissemination programs, prepare and submit reports. Assist in developing the work plan and coordinate for execution of exposure visits, training, fairs, and other extension tools for knowledge dissemination with NARES partners and also help in preparing reports thereof. S/he will organize hands'-on-training, workshops, stakeholder meetings and other platforms for knowledge sharing on key sustainable intensification technologies/ interventions and seed systems.
The incumbent will equally contribute in coordinating the research and out scaling activities of Direct-seeded Rice Consortium (DSRC) at IRRI South Asia Regional Center (ISARC), Varanasi and elsewhere in India. In 2017, IRRI established a new Direct-Seeded Rice Consortium (DSRC) – a public-private multi-stakeholder R4D platform on direct-seeded rice (DSR). The overall goal of the DSRC is to develop, refine, and catalyze widespread adoption of science-based sustainable rice production systems in Asia through mechanized and precise DSR. The incumbent will assist in planning, designing, and conducting research studies and knowledge sharing activities related to DSRC at ISARC farm and other project sites in India. The person will also assist in report writing, synthesizing research results, and publish in reputed international journals.
This position will be based at the IRRI South Asia Regional Center (ISARC) at Varanasi.
Roles and Responsibilities
Master’s degree in Agronomy or Soil Science with minimum of 5 years of work experience in dissemination and delivery of agricultural technologies with focus on crop and natural resource management solutions, mechanization, precision management, sustainability of rice-based farming systems, cultivar evaluation and strengthening of seeds systems, component trials on weed, water, and nutrient, etc, and linking with the science of modelling. Candidates with good publication record and a very strong writing skill will be preferred.
