Job Purpose

The World Bank supported APART project is aimed at increasing productivity and profitability of small and marginal farmers in rice-based cropping systems and facilitate agri-business investments, market access, and enable smallholder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to produce crops resilient to recurrent floods or droughts in 16 districts of Assam. The incumbent will provide assistance in execution of planned activities on capacity building, training, and knowledge dissemination in close coordination with Assam Agriculture University, Department of Agriculture and other stakeholders. 

Under the minimum supervision of Senior Scientist, I, and Team Leader APART project, the job holder will work towards transfer of knowledge of crop and natural management solutions, system Intensification (SI) technologies, seed systems, and post-harvest options through different audiovisual means, including training and demonstrations. Provide guidance on performance of knowledge dissemination programs, prepare and submit reports. Assist in developing the work plan and coordinate for execution of exposure visits, training, fairs, and other extension tools for knowledge dissemination with NARES partners and also help in preparing reports thereof. S/he will organize hands'-on-training, workshops, stakeholder meetings and other platforms for knowledge sharing on key sustainable intensification technologies/ interventions and seed systems.
 
The incumbent will equally contribute in coordinating the research and out scaling activities of Direct-seeded Rice Consortium (DSRC) at IRRI South Asia Regional Center (ISARC), Varanasi and elsewhere in India. In 2017, IRRI established a new Direct-Seeded Rice Consortium (DSRC) – a public-private multi-stakeholder R4D platform on direct-seeded rice (DSR). The overall goal of the DSRC is to develop, refine, and catalyze widespread adoption of science-based sustainable rice production systems in Asia through mechanized and precise DSR.  The incumbent will assist in  planning, designing, and conducting research studies and knowledge sharing activities related to DSRC at ISARC farm and other project sites in India. The person will also assist in report writing, synthesizing research results, and publish in reputed international journals.
 
This position will be based at the IRRI South Asia Regional Center (ISARC) at Varanasi.
 
Roles and Responsibilities

Purpose
  • Support in identification of and transfer of SI technologies and provide technical inputs to national partners, civil society organizations, beneficiaries, and communities related to agricultural technologies targeted in research;
  • Assist in successful dissemination of SI technologies and empowerment of local actors
  • Develop training modules/manuals and conduct the training/ exposure visits based on the modules/manuals.
  • Assist implementing partners in organizing trainings/ exposure visits or demonstrations and assist in the farmer-to-farm extension of technologies
  • Organize demonstrations, field days and farmer training on different agricultural technologies and exposure visits
  • Contribute to project’s overall communication strategy by sharing the relevant information on training and extension material, videos, success stories for media release and any other reports as may be desired from time to time.
  • Support in promoting the dissemination of project findings through workshops, popular communication channels, and other means in coordination with the broader project leadership team;
  • Help coordinate the awareness generation activities including field demonstrations and campaigning for rapid dissemination of information on delivery of SI technologies for improved cereal-based cropping systems
  • Contribute to the research and out scaling activities of DSRC at ISARC Varanasi centre and elsewhere in India by assisting in planning, conducting and coordinating research studies and knowledge sharing activities related to DSR consortium.
Engagement
  • Liaise and strengthening partnership with NARES partners, NGOs, other private sector partners, service providers, farmers’ group, and Assam project management team;
  • Assist/Coordinate DSR consortium activities at IRRI Varanasi farm and other project sites including preparation, of necessary protocols, data collection, analysis, and interpretation;
  • Help in facilitating capacity development of extension workers, agro-service professionals, and scientists of different project partners for succession dissemination of SI technologies.
Delivery
  • Plan and organize practical demonstrations, traveling seminars, interaction and feedback sessions, field days on different agricultural technologies in collaboration with different stakeholders;
  • Supporting implementing partners in organizing training, demonstrations, machinery operation & troubleshooting and assist service providers and progressive farmers through hands-on training for extension of technologies;
  • Help in establishing and maintaining Technology park for DSR consortium in India with focus on mechanization, precision management, cultivar evaluation, and component trials on weed, water, and nutrient,
  • Consolidate/synthesize and finalize reports for submission to project leaders and other stakeholders;
  • Synthesize research and survey data, and publish in reputed international journals.
  • Capturing lessons learned and success stories and sharing for ongoing impact.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Agronomy or Soil Science  with minimum of 5 years of work experience in dissemination and delivery of agricultural technologies with focus on crop and natural resource management solutions, mechanization, precision management, sustainability of rice-based farming systems, cultivar evaluation and strengthening of seeds systems, component trials on weed, water, and nutrient, etc, and linking with the science of modelling. Candidates with good publication record and a very strong writing skill will be preferred.

PhD degree in Agronomy or Soil Science  with minimum of 3 years of work experience in dissemination and delivery of agricultural technologies with focus on crop and natural resource management solutions, mechanization, precision management, sustainability of rice-based farming systems, cultivar evaluation and strengthening of seeds systems, component trials on weed, water, and nutrient, etc, and linking with the science of modelling. Candidates with good publication record and very strong writing skill will be preferred.
Skills Required

Mandatory
  • Has extensive work experience in the field of agriculture, with a specialization in agricultural production
  • Has strong oral and written communication skills

  • Has to experience in training management and facilitation
  • Is computer literate in MS office and statistical data analysis and report writing
  • Has some experience with monitoring and documentation of fields activities
  • Is a team player, can work independently
Preferred
  • Excellent writing skill and publication record in international Journals  and  experience in [dissemination and delivery of sustainable intensification technologies] is a distinct advantage
Allowances
  • House-Rent Allowance: IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
  • Transport Allowance: A monthly transport allowances are provided to NRS as follows; Job level 4-5: INR 4,000
  • Dearness Allowance: One hundred and thirteen percent (113 %) of employee’s base pay
  • Leave Travel Allowance(LTA): One month base pay per annum on availing minimum 2 days of annual/home leave
  • Education Allowance: INR 1,000/- per child per month (limited to 2 children)
