The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Acharya Nayukulu Gogineni Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), and sarmap, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is establishing a satellite-based rice monitoring system (SRMS) for the state of Andhra Pradesh for the purpose of (i) facilitating regular crop condition updates to promote greater market stabilisation and improved food security, (ii) strengthening the preparedness of the state government to respond to flood, drought, cyclone and other natural disasters affecting rice production in the state by supporting policy planning and relief effort, and (iii) improving efficiency of the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) crop insurance schemes for rice farmers in Andhra Pradesh. For effective establishment and application of the SRMS, dedicated effort must be made to collect and analyze high quality in-situ data for parameters calibration and for products verification and validation. Likewise, provision and processing of secondary data is critical for the system to capture locally relevant soil, weather, agronomic practice, and land use information. This position will provide support in the implementation of project activities particularly for in-situ data gathering including land use survey using GPS device and conducting survey to farmers and collecting secondary data from relevant sources.
These positions will be based at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.
