Job Purpose

In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Acharya Nayukulu Gogineni Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), and sarmap, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is establishing a satellite-based rice monitoring system (SRMS) for the state of Andhra Pradesh for the purpose of (i) facilitating regular crop condition updates to promote greater market stabilisation and improved food security, (ii) strengthening the preparedness of the state government to respond to flood, drought, cyclone and other natural disasters affecting rice production in the state by supporting policy planning and relief effort,  and (iii) improving efficiency of the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) crop insurance schemes for rice farmers in Andhra Pradesh. For effective establishment and application of the SRMS, dedicated effort must be made to collect and analyze high quality in-situ data for parameters calibration and for products verification and validation. Likewise, provision and processing of secondary data is critical for the system to capture locally relevant soil, weather, agronomic practice, and land use information. This position will provide support in the implementation of project activities particularly for in-situ data gathering including land use survey using GPS device and conducting survey to farmers and collecting secondary data from relevant sources.

These positions will be based at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

Roles and Responsibilities

Purpose:

  • Visit target monitoring areas in all rice growing districts for the Rabi and Kharif seasons in Andhra Pradesh to perform land use surveys using a GPS device and to capture information on the timing of rice growing season and to perform validation of rice area map.
  • Assist in survey activities to collect information from farmers on agronomic practice and information on rice production including constraints, challenges and mitigation options.

Engagement:

  • Coordinate with farmers regarding field data collection to ensure that work activities are properly communicated.
  • Provide regular updates to the supervisor to immediately resolve issues encountered during the execution of project activities.

Delivery:

  • Review data collected to ensure data accuracy and quality to be submitted to the supervisor.
  • Organize field data records for easy retrieval and proper data management
Qualifications
  • High school graduate with 5 years relevant work experience; or
  • Two years of college education with 3 years relevant work experience
Skills Required

Mandatory

  • Has basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
  • Has experience in data collection and encoding
  • Has good interpersonal skills
  • Has good organizational skills
  • Basic verbal and written English skills

Preferred

  • Has a driver’s license
  • Has experience in rice production and basic agronomic data
  • Has knowledge on cultural and gender diversity
  • Speaks local language Telegu

Allowances

House-Rent Allowance IRRI provides a house rent allowance of 40% of base pay per month.
Transport Allowance A monthly transport allowances are provided to NRS as follows:
Job Level 1-3: INR 2,000
Dearness Allowance One hundred and thirteen percent (113 %) of employee’s base pay
Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) One month base pay per annum1, on availing minimum 2 days of annual/home leave
Education Allowance INR 1,000/- per child per month
