The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Acharya Nayukulu Gogineni Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) and sarmap, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is establishing a satellite-based rice monitoring system (SRMS) for the state of Andhra Pradesh for the purpose of (i) facilitating regular crop condition updates to promote greater market stabilisation and improved food security, (ii) strengthening the preparedness of the state government to respond to flood, drought, cyclone and other natural disasters affecting rice production in the state by supporting policy planning and relief effort, and (iii) improving efficiency of the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana(PMFBY) crop insurance schemes for rice farmers in Andhra Pradesh. In supporting the development of the operational SRMS, the project will embark in dedicated activities to collect in-situ data for crop yield model inputs and parameters calibration and to validate rice monitoring products. To this end, provision and processing of secondary data will also be critical in order to capture locally relevant soil, weather, and agronomic practice information. This position will participate and overseas data collection, cleaning, and quality focusing on data use for rice growth monitoring and yield estimation. The incumbent will work closely with the supervisor (Scientist, Crop Modeller) in capacity building activities to equip NARES partners with crop modelling technology to generate and adapt and make use of rice information products to achieve project goals on food security, resilient, and crop insurance.
This position will be based at Guntur/Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

Roles and Responsibilities
Establish, coordinate and maintain linkages with project team members, local government, partners, farmer groups and universities to ensure smooth execution of field activities and work plan;
Master Degree in Agronomy, Soil Science or other related discipline with at least 3 years relevant work experience in GIS and remote-sensing; or
Recent PhD in Agronomy, Soil Science, and other related discipline with relevant experience in Crop Modelling
