The Biology Scholars Program (BSP) at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking applications for a Deputy Director (Academic Coordinator). The expected start date of this 100% full-time, two- year position is September 11, 2017 and may be renewable annually based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
The BSP at UC Berkeley is a program that challenges the "by the numbers" popular view (e.g., SATs and high school GPAs as good predictors of success) about who can and should do science. Over the past 25 years, of the 3000 BSP graduates, 60% have been underrepresented minorities (African American, Hispanic, and American Indian), 70% women, and 80% from low-income backgrounds and/or the first in their family to attend college.
The Deputy Director (Academic Coordinator) in consultation with the BSP Director will handle BSP's day- to-day operation, including 1) supervising student, clerical, and professional staff, 2) coordinating BSP's undergraduate research programs, 3) assessing the program and developing program innovations to improve the delivery of services to its members, and 4) working with the Program Administrative Officer to manage the program budget.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Program Management and Programmatic Responsibilities (50%): a) Plans, develops, implements, and monitors the program budget; b) Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the comprehensive program of activities and services (e.g., academic support and advising, research, seminars) that affect the retention and success of BSP students; c) Sets workplace policies and procedures and determines staff workloads and resources necessary to operate the program; d) Works with faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate student groups to coordinate and augment existing campus resources (e.g., people, programs, services, events) so that they are accessible to BSP students in an efficient and effective manner; e) Develops working relationships with faculty and staff in academic departments and student services units who are involved with retention and success programs and services for students from historically under-represented groups; f) Recruits, selects, trains and supervises 5.25 FTE (6 individuals) who in turn supervise 5 FTE (~15 individuals); g) Evaluates staff on an annual basis, indicating training needs and professional development activities for each staff member; h) Develops and conducts, on an annual basis, a program evaluation and makes appropriate changes in the program to increase it's impact and effectiveness on students from historically under- represented groups.
• Direct Service to Students Responsibilities (35%): a) Directly oversees the recruitment and interviewing of students for the program; b) Counsels, advises, mentors, and works with students in the program on academic, research, career, learning, and personal issues that affect their academic performance and their career path; c) Directly oversees the granting of funds to support student internships and research.
• Formal Liaison with Instructional Program Responsibilities (5%): Formal Liaison with Instructional Programs: a) Develops and implements strategies to increase the visibility and effectiveness of the program by establishing working partnerships with academic departments and relevant student support services; b) Consults regularly with faculty in Integrative Biology and other departments, with college and departmental advisors, and student service staff on ways to increase educational access for under-represented students.
• Coordination of undergraduate Internships and Research (5%): Undergraduate Internships and Research: a) Establishes working partnerships with science laboratories on and off campus (e.g., in industry and at other schools); b) Directly oversees the placement of students in internships and research positions funded by BSP; c) Evaluates the effectiveness of students' internship and research experiences.
• Program dissemination and Funding (5%): Disseminates the BSP Program model to other colleges/universities by co-writing articles for peer reviewed journals, giving invited talks, hosting site visits by college/university faculty, staff and administrators, and attending conferences; b) Designs, plans, and puts on an annual conference for college/university faculty, staff, and administrators wishing to learn to run more effectively their science diversity programs; and c) Researches and identifies grants and co-writes proposals with the Director to fund the BSP.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application): PhD (or equivalent degree) in Life Sciences disciplines (Biology or a related field) or PhD (or equivalent degree) in a discipline related to program development, operation, and goals (e.g., science education). Minimum of 5 years program management or commensurate experience (e.g. coordinating an undergraduate research program designed to broaden access to STEM research careers; coordinating the advising or tutoring components of an overall program designed to support low-income and first-to-college students in STEM majors).
Additional Qualifications Required (by start date): Demonstrated success working at UC Berkeley or comparable institution. Demonstrated leadership experience. Experience building a program to success over time. Expertise and experience with grant processes, including grant solicitation, writing, submission, application, and management
Preferred Qualifications (by start date): Experience working with undergraduate students in STEM majors as well as alumni, and graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in STEM from first- generation/low-income backgrounds.
Appointment: This position reports to BSP Director, Dr. John Matsui. The initial appointment is for 2 years with the expectation of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Minimum annual salary is $64,920, maximum annual salary is $126,468. The approximate start date of this position will be September 11, 2017.
