The Vazquez-Medina lab in the Integrative Biology Department at UC Berkeley seeks a Junior Specialist. The goals of the Vazquez-Medina lab are to understand the role of oxidative stress and redox signaling in physiological adaptation and disease. The lab studies cellular mechanisms of adaptation to natural and anthropogenic stressors in marine mammals and pre-clinical models of disease. We are looking for a motivated Junior Specialist with interest in tackling these questions using multidisciplinary approaches.

Responsibilities:
Supporting lab research: use of a combination of in vitro and in vivo work to study adaptation to oxidative stress. Experience working with mammalian cell culture, murine models and wild mammals is required.
Mice husbandry, basic mouse procedures: intravenous, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injection, gavage, anesthesia, genotyping.
Primary cell isolation, basic tissue culture, transfection and analysis of the phenotype of cell lines.
Field work with marine mammals (handling, sample collection, and processing).
Protein and gene expression analysis by qPCR, western blot, ELISA, and microscopy.
Supervising compliances with all safety and animal regulations.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application): Bachelors degree, or equivalent degree, in Integrative Biology or related field.

Additional Qualifications Required (by start date): The successful candidate will have at least one year of research assistance employment. Experience working with both, wild mammals and laboratory mice, as well as basic cell/molecular biology skills (tissue culture, microscopy, qPCR, western blot) are required.

Preferred Qualifications (by start date): Excellent communication skills and careful attention to detail, experience working both in a lab and in the field.

Appointment: This position reports to Professor Jose Vazquez-Medina. The initial appointment for 1 year with the expectation of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The approximate start date of this position will be September 2017.

Salary: $18.26/hour $19.48/hour at 100% time, depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
