Postdoctoral Scholar Statistical/Computational Biology Integrative Biology

To apply: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF01425

The University of Californias Conservation Genomics Consortium is a cross-campus effort to leverage recent developments in genomics for conservation efforts in California. The Consortium has launched the CALeDNA project (http://www.ucedna.com), aimed at collecting and analyzing environmental DNA in California. To fully take advantage of the data generated by the project, new computational methods are needed for analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data in the context of taxonomic assignment and ecological modeling. This Postdoc position will work on developing and applying new computational and statistical methods for species assignment, new methods for analyzing biases associated with sequencing technologies and PCR, and new methods for testing ecological hypotheses using large geospatial DNA data.

Development of new, and extension of exiting, statistical methods for species assignment.
Development of mathematical models for incorporating sampling biases, sequencing biases, and biases relating to PCR when analyzing large NGS data sets.
Development of statistical methods for inferring parameters of ecological models using environmental samples of DNA.
Implementation of the above mentioned methods in easy, accessible open source software packages.
Application of the methods to data generated by the Conservation of Genomics Consortium.
Dissemination of the results in peer-reviewed journals and at national and international scientific conferences.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application): Ph.D (or equivalent degree) in Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields.

Additional Qualifications Required (by start date): The successful candidate will have experience with the development of novel machine learning/statistical methods in genomics or phylogenetics, and proficiency in computing programming languages such as C/C++.

Preferred Qualifications (by start date): Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals. Experience working on the development of advanced computational methods for large data sets, database construction, and development of user interfaces. Previous experience working with NGS data and one or more of the following: (1) Environmental data, (2) Phylogenetic methods, (3) Ecological modeling.

Appointment: This position reports to Professor Rasmus Nielsen. The appointment is for 1 year. The approximate start date of this position will be September 1, 2017.

Salary: $48,216 - $56,400 at 100% time, depending on years of Postdoc experience. This position provides full benefits.
