The Research Scientist will be involved in our studies of dopamine neuron glutamate signaling and the impact of conditional reductions of glutaminase expression. The qualified candidate will work closely with sub-group members under the direct supervision of the principal investigator.
The Research Scientist will investigate the function of dopamine neuron glutamate signaling within the motivational brain circuitry and its role in the development of maladaptive behaviors associated with drug addiction and schizophrenia. The Research Scientist will employ brain slice electrophysiology to map the dopamine neuron glutamate connections in the forebrain using optogenetics, in coordination with anatomical studies using the proximity ligation assay. Regional conditional transgenic approaches will be employed to evaluate the role of glutamate metabolizing enzymatic pathways in schizophrenia-relevant behaviors, involving dopamine neuron glutamate cotransmission. Temporal conditional transgenic approaches will be used to evaluate inhibition of glutamate synthetic pathways as a pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia.
PhD degree in neuroscience or experimental psychology or related area with 5 years of relevant postdoctoral experience with a strong background in rodent behavioral testing, immunocytochemistry, brain slice electrophysiology and optogenetics. Must be organized, work well with others, be capable of working with minimal supervision, and capable of thoroughly documenting daily activities and experiments. Strong statistical facility required, with knowledge of statistical software (SPSS, G-Power, Prism) electrophysiological software (IgorPro, AxographX, pClamp), standard graphing software such as Illustrator, and Microsoft Word and Excel.
