Mechanisms of stem cell dysfunction in muscular dystrophies

Although under normal conditions muscle stem cells present a very powerful regenerative response, the regenerative potential is progressively lost in patients affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy and fibrotic tissue progressively replaces muscle fibers leading to an impairment of muscle function. This study strives to the comprehension of the cellular and molecular events leading to fibrosis and defective regeneration in muscle, and may represent an important step toward the development of novel effective therapeutic approaches.

The candidate is expected to be familiar with basic techniques in cell (cell culture, transfection) and molecular biology (quantitative RT-PCR). Willingness to work with vertebrate animal models is required. Experience with primary cultures, immunofluorescences, Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and ELISA techniques are preferential. Bioinformatics skills are also preferential, but not required.
