Laboratory Manager/Technician

A neuroscience research laboratory in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland has an immediate full-time position opening for an experienced lab manager/technician to oversee general lab operations and contribute to original research on neural circuit development in the mammalian visual system. The Speer lab is a new research group that focuses on investigating structure/function relationships in the developing retina and central retinorecipient targets using a variety of methods for identifying and manipulating microcircuits including molecular biology tools, electrophysiology, and super-resolution structural imaging.

Job responsibilities include maintaining laboratory records of equipment and reagents, pricing/ordering reagents and equipment as needed, establishing a wet-lab for tissue processing and animal research, epi/confocal fluorescence microscopy data collection, and small animal (mouse) work including colony management, surgery, and tissue processing for fluorescence microscopy. This person will work side-by-side with the PI and students to conduct original research in visual system neurodevelopment. Additional responsibilities include interfacing with Occupational Health and Safety, Animal Care and Use personnel, veterinary staff, and other University staff as needed to ensure compliance with all mandated safety/regulatory protocols.


Job Requirements

B.S. biology/chemistry/psychology/neuroscience or related; four years’ post-college research or work experience in a laboratory/scientific setting; ability to work independently and shift flexibly between varying work demands; strong organizational skills; experience with mouse husbandry/breeding/genotyping is required. Previous experience with laboratory management, stereotaxic surgery, immunohistochemistry/histology, or fluorescence/electron microscopy imaging is preferred, but not essential. This is a full-time position offering competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with experience. Initial contract will be for 1 year and, ideally, will be extended based on performance.
