Junior Specialist, Step I-II ‚ÄďProtein Engineering‚Äď Innovative Genomics Institute
The junior specialist will be part of a research team at the Innovative Genomics Institute in UC Berkeley focused on protein engineering, biochemistry, and evolution to design, build, and test novel CRISPR proteins with enhanced functionalities.
The majority of the effort will be focused on, protein engineering techniques including: library generation strategies, screening and selecting for function, high throughput vector creation, deep sequencing, bacterial and human cell culture, assay development, protein purification and biochemistry for candidate testing and validation.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (At the time of application):
Bachelor‚Äôs degree, or equivalent degree, in Biology, Plant Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Bioengineering or a related field.
Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):
The successful candidate will have at least two years part time OR one year full time doing molecular biology in a laboratory. Experience with the scientific method, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, molecular cloning including Gibson and Golden gate and bacterial cell culture and CRISPR systems is required.
¬†Preferred qualifications (By start date):
Excellent communication skills, careful attention to detail and a high level of organization in documentation will be highly valuable. Experience with deep sequencing, human cell culture, development and use of high-throughput screening and selection systems, protein library creation techniques, flow cytometry and cell sorting, western blotting, protein purification, biochemical assays such as EMSAs, and running assays in human or bacterial cells are preferred.
This position reports to Dr. Benjamin Oakes. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for 6 months - 1 year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The approximate start date of this position will be June 2017.¬†
Salary: $17.99/hour ‚Äď $19.18/hour at 100% time, depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
