Â Title: Associate Specialist Step I-IV â€“ Organisms & Environmentâ€“ Environmental Science, Policy and Management
Associate Specialist: The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley seeks applications for an Associate Specialist, in the area of Organisms & Environment to work in Professor Rodrigo Almeidaâ€™s lab.
Responsibilities: Conduct transmission and feeding preference experiments with sharpshooter leafhopper vectors of Xylella fastidiosa; develop spatial epidemic models on the spread of X. fastidiosa in vineyards and synthesize experimental data with epidemic model predictions; analyze the spatial dynamics of sharpshooter vectors from large-scale monitoring data; maintain herbivorous insect colonies, greenhouse plants, and microbial cultures.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application): A Bachelorâ€™s degree, or equivalent degree, in plant pathology, entomology, ecology, biostatistics, or related field. Additional Required Qualifications (By start date): Demonstrated experience in plant pathology, entomology, ecology, biostatistics, or related field. Demonstrated experience with conducting experiments on insect-plant-microbe interactions and hierarchical Bayesian statistics.
Preferred Qualifications (By start date): Experience with modeling in disease ecology or epidemiology, with a background in ecology of vector-borne plant pathogens, and expertise in R statistical programming language are preferred. A PhD degree or equivalent degree, in plant pathology, entomology, ecology, biostatistics, or related field or 5 yearsâ€™ experience in a lab.
Appointment: This position reports to Professor Rodrigo Almeida. The appointment will be full-time with an approximate start date in Spring 2017 or Summer 2017. The initial appointment is for 12 months, with renewal based on performance and funding.
