Specialist: The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley is looking for a highly motivated chemical analysis research and instrumentation specialist. This position engages in environmental chemical research and is responsible for development, evaluation and maintenance of instrumentation and analytical methods for determination and quantification of organic chemical species in environmental samples. The incumbent will provide expertise, training, and supervision to other lab personnel requiring chemical analysis for research efforts leading to publications in environmental science, chemical science, and technical journals.
â€¢ Engage in research proposal development, data collection, data analysis, presentation, and publication. â€¢Develop new analytical chemistry capabilities through engineering of new instrumental systems, methods, and software.
â€¢ Publish results of novel analytical systems development, and evaluations of methodological applications to environmental chemistry.
â€¢ Support and strengthen current analytical capabilities via optimization and maintenance of current instrumentation, methods, and software.
â€¢ Collaborate with lab graduate students and post-docs to apply said instrumentation and techniques to publishable research within the labâ€™s scientific purview.
â€¢ Prepare and contribute to posters and talks for professional society conferences and meetings.
â€¢ Attend conferences and meetings for exchange of intellectual developments within the labâ€™s scientific purview.
â€¢ Review and provide advice to other lab academicsâ€™ contributions to conference proceedings.
â€¢ Liaison with collaborating labs, professional organizations, and intellectual societies to promote lab and University science activities and inform and support the scientific community and the public at large.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application): Masterâ€™s degree, or equivalent degree in Physical or Life Sciences, or a related field.
Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):
â€¢ Experience in preparation of scientific publications.
â€¢ Authorship in peer-reviewed scientific publications.
â€¢ Demonstrated collaborative and communication skills applicable to academic research.
â€¢ 5+ yearsâ€™ experience in development and application of chemical analytical systems including gas chromatography, electron impact, proton transfer reaction, and VUV ionization mass spectrometry, aerosol thermal desorption, and spectrophotometry.
â€¢ Professional-level experience in software and electronics development and computational data analysis equivalent to 5+ years in industry.
â€¢ Mechanical and electrical engineering skills enabling independent development of new instrumental systems.

â€¢ Authorship in 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications.
