This position provides science and technical support for biological experiments on spaceflight missions for research grants awarded to civil servant science lead/lab principal investigator.
This work would include working with a variety of biological organisms including Drosophila melanogaster, other insects and microbes to support space biology research.
The candidate will work under limited supervision and will optimize hardware and payload implementation based on scientific rationale.
â¢Design and perform appropriate molecular biological, microbiological, and genetics experiments to support research project.
â¢Investigate relevant scientific literature relating to project to aid in the design of the experiments.
â¢Troubleshoot techniques in the lab to optimize experiments and protocols.
â¢Assist in ordering lab supplies, maintain safety data sheets.
â¢Prepare technical reports, scientific and lay summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.
â¢Prepare and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
â¢Prepare and submit grant proposals for research relating to space biology as needed.
â¢Attend and present material at scientific conferences, project reviews, regular laboratory meetings as needed.
â¢Support outreach visits and mentor student interns as needed.
The incumbent should have a Bachelor's with 4 to 7 years of experience or a Master's with 2 to 5 years of experience or a PhD with 0 to 3 years of experience in Molecular Biology, Genetics or any other related field in Biology.
Required Skills/Training: â¢Training in Drosophila genetics or molecular biology or a closely related area is essential.
â¢Strong working knowledge of fruit fly culturing and handling is required.
â¢Excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to write science clearly, concisely and independently.
â¢Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
â¢Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
â¢Ability to travel to off-site locations as needed
Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:
â¢PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics or any other related field in Biology with 2 years of experience.
â¢2 or more years of experience working in space biology.
â¢Experience working with small satellite payloads and microfluidics.
