Location: Saint John, NB, CA

A full-time grant paid postdoctoral position for two years is available starting January 2017 for a highly motivated individual to study immunometabolism in the laboratories of Dr. Thomas Pulinilkunnil and Dr. Jean Francois Legare, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University New Brunswick Campus. Additional training opportunity in advanced experimental immunology will also be encouraged in the laboratory of Dr Jean Marshall at Dalhousie University Halifax Campus.

Project Description: Pulinilkunnil Legare laboratory is studying the metabolic underpinning of dysregulated immune-inflammatory response during myocardial infarction and cardiac fibrosis.  This research area is a CIHR funded initiative titled “Restitution Enhancement in Arthritis and Chronic Heart disease” (REACH) which aims to improve therapy and patient care. This trans-disciplinary research team will characterize the immunometabolic pathways associated with poor disease resolution following post-MI inflammation. Using rodent models of metabolic maladaptation, myocardial fibrosis, cell lines, and in vitro human model systems, the ability to enhance the resolution of inflammation and tissue restitution through modulation of glucose, fat and amino acid metabolism will be investigated. Studies will focus on examining immunomodulatory cross talk between cardiomyocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, endothelial cells and fibroblast preceding and following myocardial infarction. Molecular studies will be coupled with tests of physiological measurements.

Qualification and skills: The applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences or other related disciplines within the last three years with impressive publication record to be competitive for provincial and national scholarships. Candidate must have a strong background/training in cellular immunology & inflammation, cardiac physiology and metabolism, and molecular cardiology. Furthermore expertise in animal handling, cell culture, cell and molecular biology, mouse transgenesis is essential. Molecular cloning, plasmid production, Westerns, Q-PCR, next generation sequencing, RNAi methodology, gene editing methodologies is highly desirable. Candidate must demonstrate intellectual and working independence and exhibit absolute proficiency in spoken and written English.

Duties and responsibilities:  This PDF position will require a significant amount of in-vivo, in-vitro, immunological and molecular studies. However, importantly it will provide unique opportunities for intellectual input, opportunities for personal development and to work in a vibrant translational research area.

Procedure to apply: Please submit a single PDF package containing a cover letter, CV, publication record and one page detailing expertise, research interests/career goals, and contact information for three referees to Dr. Thomas Pulinilkunnil (tpulinil(at)dal.ca). Application will be accepted until 4.00 pm, December 05, 2016 and no formal acknowledgement to the applicants will be sent. Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be preferred for this position.  Applications will be reviewed until the positions are filled. Only selected candidates will be contacted.
