The Vision Research Center, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy, seeks an outstanding candidate for a non-tenure track, Research Assistant/Associate Professor.   Successful candidates will be expected to have an area of research complementary to other investigators in the UMKC Vision Research Center who are developing a comprehensive research program in mechanisms of pathogenesis of eye diseases, and strategies for therapeutic intervention with a strong focus on degenerative diseases affecting the retina. This expanding program is based on research into retina cell biology, and includes molecular biology, pharmacology, electrophysiology, imaging, and proteomics with a strong emphasis on translational research.  Depending on the qualifications and research focus of the applicant this position offers numerous opportunities in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary setting, such as involvement in the university’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, appointments in other health science schools and UMKC schools engaged in eye and vision research, and participation in funding opportunities. The Vision Research Center has committed significant funds to expand its translational research programs.

The chosen candidate must have earned a doctoral degree in a relevant academic discipline and if the applicant holds an MD degree must be a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained in diseases of the retina and vitreous. The applicant is expected to have a competitive publication record of original peer-reviewed research in vision research. This position will be responsible for conducting electrophysiology and microscopy experiments to support vision research projects. This involves preparing biological and other specimens for imaging and electrophysiology and to acquire, analyze and publish related data. 

Additional qualifications will contribute to this overall expectation and include:

  • Strong project planning, leadership, and presentation skills in translational research
  • Ability to multi-task and manage several research projects in parallel
  • Ability to forge cross-functional working relationships with internal researchers and external project collaborators
  • Ability to be proactive in identifying and overcoming issues and hurdles that may handicap the effective implementation of basic, translational and clinical research projects based on the applicant’s extensive experience with compliance and regulatory frameworks
  •  Teaching experience related to medical student, graduate student, resident, fellow, and postdoctoral training and mentoring
